Ancelotti expected La Liga fight

Ancelotti expected La Liga fightReal Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti says he isn’t surprised by the form of Atletico Madrid and favourites for La Liga Barcelona so far this season and that he knew things would be difficult for him in La Liga.

The Italian was handed the reins at the Bernabeu in the summer, charged with the task of wrestling back the title from his club’s bitter rivals while also counteracting the threat being posed by neighbours Atletico.

The former Chelsea boss believes it can still be done and although he always knew it would be tough, has set his side a target of 100 points which he believes will be enough.

"I think that the Spanish league is very high in quality," Ancelotti said on Tuesday. "They (Barca and Atletico) are the only sides in Europe to have 43 points from this amount of games, and that's the thing with this league – to win it you need to get more or less 100 points, and that's something we know.

"We'll try to get as many as we can, but it's not a surprise, no."

As things stand, Real currently sit five points behind the duo going into the final round of fixtures ahead of the traditional winter break and have a tricky test on their hands in the football match betting markets this Sunday when they face the improving Valencia at the Mestalla.

However, despite some early hiccups, Los Blancos have mainly impressed at both home and abroad with them also cruising through their Champions League group and gearing up for a meeting against Schalke in the last 16.

Winning the club’s now mythical tenth European title would see Ancelotti go down in Real history, but it is in the league where most Bernabeu coaches are judged and he will know that coming second behind Barcelona will put him under huge pressure, while finishing behind Atletico could possibly bring about a premature end to his tenure.

With their rivals in such good form though, it looks as though the 54-year-old faces an uphill battle to wrestle back the league over the next few months.
