Landon Donovan and goalkeeper Hope Solo today were named Footballer of the Year, said the American Federation of that discipline (U.S. Soccer).
Donovan, 27, won recognition for the third time in his career, as he previously won in 2003 and 2004. Now tied with goalkeeper Kasey Keller, who was awarded in 1997, 1999 and 2005.
During the year, Donovan joined the U.S. team that finished second in the Federations Cup in South Africa, and which won the hexagonal qualifier for the World Championship 2010 in the African country.
American striker, winning MVP with Los Angeles Galaxy in MLS, scored 12 goals along the way and reached 35 World Cup appearances with the national uniform.
"It'sa great achievement and a big prize," said Donovan. "Knowing that I'm very proud I had the backing of the fans, my teammates and other colleagues. It is a very special recognition for me."

Real Madrid 6-0 yesterday swept Zaragoza in Spanish league football and stood just two behind leaders Barcelona.
At the Bernabeu, the locals sank Zaragoza and embittered the debut of new coach Jose Aurelio Gay.
With the result, moreover, Madrid became the highest scoring team in the major European leagues, the added 40 goals in 15 presentations, and an average of 2.6 goals per game.

Barcelona fell just short of his sixth title of the year by beating Mexico's Atlante 3-1 to advance to the final of Club World to Students.
In the Zayed Sports City Stadium, Abu Dhabi, the Barca goals were scored by Sergio Busquets (35 '), Lionel Messi (55') and Pedro Rodriguez (67 '), going up even initial disadvantage.
Barça began playing and trying the ball well, while Atlante showed respectful.
However, the Atlante surprised to open the scoring after five minutes with a bit of Guillermo Rojas. A long ball released by the Mexican defense to beat the Catalans, and the little midfielder passed the ball over goalkeeper Victor Valdes and scored almost at will (1-0).
CONCACAF champions took refuge in their area and successfully stopped the attack of Barcelona, and even had another opportunity to increase the lead on a counterattack in which Carles Puyol cleared the shot from Fernando Navarro.

The Real Madrid and Barcelona are still in a tight battle for the lead of Spain. Both clubs garnered significant victories in duels yesterday by the fourteenth day of the league.
Earlier, Barcelona scored three points in his race for the title of the hand of his striker, Swede Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who reached 11 touchdowns.
Ibrahivomic with good technique became a controversial penalty which ultimately would be the only goal in which Barca won 1-0 at Espanyol in the Catalan derby.
Later, Real Madrid, without their star Cristiano Ronaldo for Kaka suspension and injury, beat visiting Valencia 2-3 in a match that shined in the second half.
The meringues came to the Mestalla with the obligation to win five to shorten the distance with Barca, who thanks to his victory reached 39 units.
