Phelps broke his previous record of 50.40 from his compatriot Ian Crocker, established July 30, 2005 at the World Championships in Montreal. In this day, the 'Kid Baltimore' was his fifth individual world record after staying in the Olympic Games in Beijing-2008 marks the orbital styles 200 m, 200 m butterfly, 200 m and 400 m free styles. The U.S. had imposed in the 100m butterfly in Beijing and Athens-2008-2004, but without managing to impose a new world record, which until then belonged to Crocker. Second proof of Tyler McGill arrived with a time of 51.06 and Aaron Peirsol third with 51.30.
