Cavendish handled the distance of 196.5 kilometers of the third stage disputed between Marseilles and La Grande-Motte with an unofficial time of 5 hours, 1 minutes and 24 seconds. Armstrong and 23 other runners made the same record. Swiss Fabian Cancellara extended his lead to 33 seconds as a leader in the general classification after stage disputed on flat terrain. In a warm and windy days, the specialists in speed set the tone of the tour in southern France. Cavendish and his colleagues at the Columbia team imposed their domination when missing 30 kilometers from the finish, to lead a batch of 29 fugitives, which included the American Armstrong and Cancellara. The Tour will culminate on July 26 in Paris.
