Bodemeister, Not I’ll Have Another, The Favorite For Preakness Stakes

Online Horse Racing Preakness Stakes OddsAfter such an incredible finish to the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs earlier this month, the stage is now set for the second leg of the 2012 Triple Crown the Preakness Stakes live from the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland this Saturday. Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another will be a legitimate contender once again when the Run For The Black Eyed Susans gets underway, but it would be unwise to rule out the horse it so narrowly beat out at the Kentucky Derby as Bodemeister is back once again as the betting websites favorite to win.

Bodemeister is listed at + 140 odds to win by the price per head bookies, significantly higher than I’ll Have Another at + 400, and for one obvious reason. The difference between these two horses at Churchill Downs was the stamina that I’ll Have Another showed coming from behind to win down the final stretch, however because the Preakness Stakes is run at the shortest distance of the three Triple Crown races, it is unlikely the Derby winner will have the chance to do that again. Bodemeister has the better straight-line speed and burst, and this time once it has the lead it will not give it up.

Of course, the post-position that both horses draw should be taken in to consideration as well, but as long as the sports betting favorite doesn’t end up on the outside or inside rail it should be fine out of the break.

Beyond the top two, the BetOnline field really is wide open, which is why both Bodemeister and I’ll Have Another will be expected to at least show. The third-place finisher at the Kentucky Derby was Dullahan, but it won’t compete in the Preakness Stakes. Went The Day Well is listed at + 800 to win after finishing fourth at the Derby, but there is better value out there when trying to break down the top-three. One horse that should garner some serious attention should it get a favorable post-position is Creative Cause, which is currently listed at +1000 odds. Creative Cause finished fifth at Churchill Downs, the first time in nine races that it failed to show, and should be primed to bounce back. Teeth of the Dog is listed at +3000, but has excellent speed and that will be a significant factor at such a short distance, while the hometown favorite Pretension should be in contention to show at + 2500.

The home fans in Baltimore won’t have an NHL or NBA team to cheer for as the playoffs resume for both sports this weekend, and while the Orioles have represented the city well in the MLB, pause for the Preakness Stakes will be well deserved. Bodemeister has been listed as the favorite ahead of I’ll Have Another for a legitimate reason, and while there are some names worth investing in to show, concentrate on the favorite to win the second leg of the Triple Crown outright.
