Mike Singletary took the decision. Singletary and Smith Hill informed individually of the decision, and after both quarterbacks gathered for another meeting. "I am excited by both, and is what I wanted the two to understand," said Singletary. "The two got together to understand why I made the decision and how important it is for them to continue demanding and competing. I appreciate his attitude throughout this process. I feel very fortunate to have them both. They did a great effort. " Although Singletary said after the 49ers victory over the Raiders 21-20 in the second week of the preseason than any quarterback had excelled in the competition, chose Hill as the starter after giving opportunity to everyone during game preseason. Smith started against the Raiders, completing only 3 of 9 passes for 30 yards and an interception. Hill did not do much better, hitting in 3 of 7 sends for 20 yards. Singletary said that consistency and leadership of Hill have been some of the factors that helped him make the decision.
