Here we go again. Another week of Tebow-bashing is in the offi ng and with it the critics are out in full force following the Broncos’ debacle against the Chiefs last week.
Despite a sorrowful 6-for-22 passing effort, good for 60 yards and an interception, Tim’s troops escaped hell’s wrath when Oakland lost and Denver was awarded the AFC West division title based on the 3rd tie-breaker (the best record among common opponents).
Through it all, the Broncos ride a 0-3 ITS run into this contest, which pales in comparison next to Pittsburgh’s 12-0 ITS mark in its last 12 contests.
However, before snapping the rubber band on what appears to be the top mismatch on this year’s opening round Wild Card games, remember a similar scenario last year when New Orleans laid 10 points in what looked to be a hapless spot for the Seahawks in Seattle.
The Seahawks’ win improved Wild Card home pick/dogs to 14-7 SU and 16-5 ATS as they sent the Saints back to Bourbon Street with a black eye.
It’s also worth noting that home teams in opening round games that were absent from the playoffs the previous three years are a nifty 22-8 SU and 19-7-1 ATS since 1980.
And defending Super Bowl losers chip in at 2-10-1 ATS in their first game when playing off a win. Pittsburgh’s lack of success in this series (5-10 SU last 15 meetings) is hardly encouraging, as well.
Nor is its 1-7 ATS mark as non-division road chalk off a win.
While the Steelers are our choice to make it to the Super Bowl out of the AFC, the fact of the matter is they are laying more points today than they did last week at Cleveland – and it’s simply not justifi ed. You know what to do. Grab the beads and take the points.
Sportsbooks currently have the Steelers listed as 8-point favorites versus the Broncos, while the game's total is sitting at 35½.
