NFL Betting: NFC Focus Shifts To West Coast as Day Progresses

2011 NFL Football PicksWith the initial set of week one games played and out of the way, the NFL betting lines focus will shift in the NFC to the west coast, but not without some attention on the nation’s capital. On the anniversary of 9/11 there will be plenty of emotion around the day’s events, and that passion will likely translate on to the football field.

New York Giants (-3) @ Washington Redskins
Sunday, 4:15 PM ET

The Giants of New York will take to the football field in the nation’s capital for their regular season opener, in one of the key early NFC East matchups that will begin to shape one of the most complete divisions in the league. The Redskins have taken steps in the right NFL pick direction in head coach Mike Shanahan’s second year, but with question marks about whether Rex Grossman is capable of handling the starter’s role and a lack of playmakers on both sides of the ball, Washington could struggle early.

There is no question who the starting quarterback for New York will be with Eli Manning healthy and ready to prove his critics wrong. The Giants are undefeated in their last five trips to FedEx Field, a sports betting trend that will continue this sports betting weekend.

NFL Betting Pick: New York Giants  -3

Carolina Panthers @ Arizona Cardinals (-7)
Sunday, 4:15 PM ET

NFL fans don’t have to go fishing for a storyline here, as each team debuts its new franchise quarterback with only one win up for grabs. While the Panthers look to see what rookie first overall pick Cam Newton can do when the spotlight is the brightest, Arizona turns the keys over to Kevin Kolb, who at the least has to be better than the stable they had at the position a year ago. Kolb has delivered a quick rapport with wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, but there are still question marks for the Cardinals on both sides of the ball. A seven-point spread is pretty high, and the Panthers may be able to surprise by keeping it close.

NFL Betting Pick: Carolina Panthers + 7

Seattle Seahawks @ San Francisco 49ers (-5.5)
Sunday, 4:15 PM ET

Rarely does a division winner come back the following season having lost nearly nothing to its roster and open against a division rival that didn’t make the playoffs the previous season as 5.5-point underdogs, but that’s where the Seahawks find themselves. Seattle head coach Pete Caroll has committed his future to Tarvaris Jackson with mixed reviews, but regardless of the decision it makes no sense to think that Alex Smith and the 49ers deserve to be this big of a sports betting bonus favorite, does it? Seattle added playmakers on both sides of the ball, and while they may not win their opener it just doesn’t make sense to go against them when they have close to six points against a team with Smith as their quarterback no matter how bad they have played on the road in the past.

NFL Betting Pick: Seattle Seahawks + 5.5
