Is this Cam Newton guy hot or what? He scored three rushing touchdowns last Sunday against Tampa to give him 13 for the season, breaking Steve Grogan’s NFL record of 12. “He’s getting a great feel and an understanding for what we want to do and what we need to do,” gushed Panthers head coach Steve Rivera. “He’s a dynamic personality in terms of this offense.” We can’t say the same about Matty Ice and the fl oundering Atlanta attack in last week’s 17-10 loss at Houston. Ryan completed just 43% of his passes (two INT’s) and RB Michael Tuner was held to 44 yards on 14 carries as the Falcons registered their lowest point total of the betting season. In fact, we were wondering why Carolina was made the dog in today’s matchup until our database tipped us off to a potential Atlanta bounce-back. The A-Team has made short work of the Carolina Cats of late, winning and covering five of the last six meetings (beat the Panthers 31-17 at home in October). Atlanta is also a sweet 7-0 ATS after scoring 10 or few points in its last game and has racked up a 9-3 ATS mark versus an opponent off a double-digit ATS win. Head coach Mike ‘Let’s Go For It On 4th Down’ Smith also contributes with a 4-0 ATS record in the fi nal four games of the season matched up against a foe off a SU win. Carolina is a near-perfect 8-0-1 ATS versus a foe off a SU favorite loss and an equally impressive 9-1 ATS after scoring 35 or more points. With good numbers on both sides, the bottom line is we’re more interested in backing the winning team off the loss than the losing team off the win. Lay the short number with the frustrated Falcons. Sportsbooks at Vegas currently have the Falcons listed as 3-point favorites versus the Panthers, while the game's total is sitting at 48½.
