Alex Smith trade to Kansas CityThe arrival of Alex Smith to Kansas City for quarterback Matt Cassel has no team. The Arizona Cardinals are among the teams interested in Cassel.

The Cardinals coach Bruce Arians hired to fix the offense and a quarterback situation that has turned negative. The solution probably includes bringing someone to replace the triumvirate of Kevin Kolb, John Skelton, Ryan Lindley.

This is how things start to fall: Smith to Kansas City, Cassel and elsewhere thereafter. Last year, the Colts select Andrew Luck planning, which Peyton Manning went to Denver and Tim Tebow went to New York.

The Cardinals were interested in Smith, but now have to move to their second choice. Arians want to see more long passes, and while Cassel is not famous for having a cannon arm, it would certainly be an improvement.

Cassel threw 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2008 and 27 touchdowns with seven interceptions in 2010. So there is an example of successful, sustainable just need consistency.

Cassel is not a long-term franchise quarterback, but should be able to lead a team to the playoffs with a solid defense and Larry Fitzgerald catching passes in this hypothetical scenario. Kolb and Cassel are two of the most recent stories of caution in terms of signing free agents with minimal experience, but at least retained ownership Cassel in Kansas City and led the Chiefs to the playoffs.
