The Nevada Wolf Pack and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles will meet on December 24 at Aloha Stadium in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.
Larry Fedora may be leaving Southern Miss for North Carolina but he sure didn’t leave Conference USA any parting gifts.
In fact, the Eagles’ upset of previously unbeaten Houston cost the Cougars a BCS bowl berth and the conference a rare huge payday.
And while we do like the fact that Fedora is only one of two head men (Erickson being the other) – not including interim coaches (Withers, Fickell) – that will fi nish the job with their ‘former’ teams, we don’t like the idea that this is the Eagles first ever ‘let’s get lei’d vacation.’
Yes, Nevada is just 1-7 SU and ATS in their last eight visits to Aloha Stadium but veteran HC Chris Ault should have a huge advantage in terms of travel preparation.
We realize that the Eagles may feel invincible off their upset of Houston but many bowl teams have fallen prey as favorites off a season-ending SU dog win of +10 or more points, posting a not-so-super 5-8 ATS log.
And while a quick glance shows that Conference USA is 10-3 ATS all-time versus the WAC in post-season play, a deeper look shows they were favored in just three of those contests (1-2 ATS).
With a Christmas Eve spent hanging in Honolulu and a fat new contract waiting in the wings at Chapel Hill, maybe no one outside of Jim Harbaurgh’s 49ers (of course) has it better than Larry Fedora this holiday season.
However, it’s just not tonight as the Reno Pack improves to 15-1 SU and 10-6 ATS off a SU and ATS win, including 4-0 ATS when taking points.
Thus, in honor of Santa, we’re tossing away our ‘Fedora’ for a big red hat as we’ll look to score with the dangerous dog in a battle of ‘double-deuce’ offenses.
Sportsbooks currently have the Golden Eagles listed as 6-point favorites against the Wolf Pack, and the game's total is sitting at 60.
Nevada Wolf Pack vs. Southern Miss Golden Eagles Stats:
