It sure went south in a hurry at the Farm. Just one loss, a 53-30 mugging by Oregon – coupled with a struggle against Cal last week – and the 10-1 Cardinal have somehow slid clear down to No. 9 in the new BCS rankings (QB Andrew Luck’s Heisman campaign is losing steam, too). You’d expect them to be primed here against a Notre Dame team they whipped 37-14 at South Bend last year, right? The problem with backing Stanford, though, is this: Oregon kicks off its game with Oregon State over four hours earlier and since a Ducks’ win gives them the Pac-12 North trophy, the Cardinal could be very up – or very down – depending on the result from Eugene. The Irish need no extra incentive after having been dissected by Luck and company last year, and it doesn’t hurt that the Dame stands 3-1 ATS overall and 5-1 ATS on the road in this intriguing series. Head coach Brian Kelly should also have his guys ready to go after sleepwalking through last week’s 16-14 win over Boston College. Stanford doesn’t come to the party empty-handed. The Tree is on a 4-0 ATS run versus a non-conference foe with revenge and also boasts a 6-0 ATS mark versus .500 or less opposition this year. But Kelly counters with a 13-3-1 ATS bonanza as a dog versus a foe off an ATS loss. Make no mistake; the Irish want this one bad… and with a defense that hasn’t yielded over 35 points all year, the O-boys should score enough to keep it interesting. Take it if you play it. Sportsbooks currently have the Cardinal listed as 6½-point favorites versus the Fighting Irish, while the game's total is sitting at 58.
