New Mexico Bowl – Matthews, Bulldogs will run circles around Wyoming New Mexico Bowl

Wyoming Cowboys vs Fresno State Bulldogs

NCAA Football Odds: Fresno State -11

While there are plenty of rumors that Fresno State Bulldogs head coach Pat Hill may be leaving, you wouldn’t know it from his demeanor. Hill has one thing on his mind: win the New Mexico Bowl.

Sports handicapping experts should know that the Bulldogs come into this game on a high after an emotional win over Illinois just two weeks ago, where the Bulldogs needed a miracle two-point conversion to get the win. The win was the 100th career victory for Hill, who has now taken the Bulldogs to a bowl game in 10 of his 11 years.

The Bulldogs are back in the New Mexico Bowl in as many years and this time they’ll try to win it. Last year, they lost 40-35 to Colorado State.

The Cowboys are happy to be bowling in Dave Christensen’s first year. This will be their first bowl game appearance since 1987.

They’ll be happy to be here but winning the game may be an entirely different story. The Cowboys are an 11-point underdog and they’ll have to figure out how to kick start their offense if they don’t want to get blown out.

The Cowboys were shutout three separate times this year and in three other games, they didn’t even make it past the 10-point mark.

The Cowboys specialize in taking care of the football – something they didn’t do two years ago. The Cowboys had a +29 turnover margin improvement from 2008 and a large part of that was the performance of freshman quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels.

There are still many flaws on the Cowboys offenses, though, including an offensive line that averaged nearly three sacks per game. They’ll be going up against the 111th-ranked defense in the nation, which should make the task a little easier for them, but they still have problems to deal with.

The Bulldogs have a very good offense led by running back Ryan Mathews. He led the nation in rushing yards per game with 151.3. The Cowboys defense gives up 27.3 points per game, so this should be an area where those who wager on sports would expect Fresno State to dominate.

As long as the Bulldogs don’t turn it over, they’ll win and cover rather easily.

Sportsbook Picks: Fresno State -11
