Navy Midshipmen vs. Army Black Knights SpreadThe Navy Midshipmen and the Army Black Knights will meet on Saturday at FedExField. Join Now to Bet on this Game!

This afternoon’s service academy skirmish marks the fi rst time since 2002 that both teams will be home for the holidays.

The Mids will not be going bowling for the first time in nine years because of a 27-24 defeat at San Jose State back on November 19.

“We lost five games by a total of 11 points, but the bottom line is that we still lost,” Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo lamented.
“That’s how small a margin of error we have here. We can never take (winning) for granted.”

But maybe they can here. Army has lost nine in a row to the Midshipmen by a combined score of 322-91 (the closest game in the stretch was in 2006, with Navy winning 26-14). As you might expect, the lion’s share of positive ATS history sides with the sailors.

Check out these numbers: 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings and 12-2-1 SU and 13-2 ATS when the Middies own the better record – including a perfect 9-0 ATS if Navy owns a win percentage of less than .667.

Admiral Niumatalolo chips in with a profi table 10-3 ATS log versus a foe off a SU and ATS loss and his swabbies have secured a 5-1 SU and ATS record off a SU favorite loss versus an opponent off a SU and ATS loss.

Surprisingly, Army’s rush offense actually leads the nation with 351 YPG (5.6 yards per carry) while Navy is breathing down their necks with a 314 YPG rush average, good for 5th place.

But here’s the killer: the Black Knights are 0-7 SU and 2-5 ATS in games in which they allowed 125 or more rushing yards this betting season.

The ground troops could also fi nd themselves bogged down because of injuries to QB Trent Steelman.

A high left ankle sprain kept him out of the majority of four straight contests and he hurt his right leg in his last game against Temple. As a result, an Army offense that scored at least 20 points in each of its first eight games has totaled only 40 points in its last three contests.

In addition, the Black Knights have not fared well in games played away from West Point in 2011, losing all seven games outright. Thanks to a 3-week layoff, both squads will approach this game with a ‘bowl’ mentality but for the first time, the participants will be leaving Philadelphia behind to meet at FedEx Field in Landover, MD.

With Army getting outscored 269-136 this season when not playing on its home turf, we’ll lay the touchdown price with the better, more motivated team here today.

Sportsbooks Odds: Midshipmen listed as 7-point favorites against the Black Knights, while the game's total is sitting at 57.
