Paterno's family confirmed the death of Paterno in a statement released this January 22.

Paterno's son, Scott, announced November 18 that his father was being treated for lung cancer, which was diagnosed in mid-November after a routine appointment for bronchitis.

In the course of his illustrious career, Paterno won 409 victories in 46 seasons, plus two national championships.

But his reputation, carved with the ideal of winning gracefully, was marred when a former aide was accused of sexually abusing 10 children over a period spanning 15 years, in some cases in the same sports complex at the University of Penn State.

His detractors criticized the claim that did little to prevent abuse. He was dismissed on November 9 following the scandal.

In total, Paterno led five teams undefeated seasons without a tie.
