The Akron Zips and the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks will try to pick up a win on Thursday Fred C Yager Stadium, in a betting game televised on ESPNU. The three-game Thursday card features yet another MAC contest and one that carries almost as much weight as the two earlier showdowns. Yes, the RedHawks are just 3-5 on the season but they are tied with the Owls and Bobcats atop the wide-open Eastern Division and actually control their own destiny with trips to Philadelphia and Athens still left on the November docket. More importantly, last year’s MAC champs need wins in three of their final four games to go bowling in consecutive campaigns for the first time since the 2003-2004 seasons. Step One figures to be a success. Akron hasn’t exactly zipped out of the gates (1-7 SU with their only win coming against an FCS school) this betting season and has not posed much of a threat in this series of late (1-6 SU). And while the RedHawks have had trouble from an ATS standpoint in recent meetings (0-2-1 ATS last three), they have outscored the Zips 96-43 the last two times they have been installed as double-digit chalk (2-0 SU and ATS). The bottom line is we’re not interested in backing a team that is riding an 11-game conference road-losing skein. Look for the hosts to deliver a much-needed beatdown tonight in Oxford as our betting predictions warns us that it’s ‘Now or Never’ for the desperate RedHawks… and we don’t need the ‘English Dictionary’ to explain the meaning of that.
