Are Spurriers Gamecocks Be Ready To Rebound?

south carolina gamecocksThe South Carolina Gamecocks had a bit of setback last season. After registering three straight 11-win seasons, they fell back to just 7-6. A lot of people who bet sportsbook futures are wondering whether this team is a good option to rebound or whether last season was a signal of a downtrend. It’s up to Spurrier to make sure this nosedive ends immediately and he gets this program back in the right direction.

It says a lot about the South Carolina program that 7-6 isn’t good enough anymore. Before Spurrier got Columbia, this team was a doormat. Clearly, the standard has changed over the last decade. This year, if they’re to challenge in the SEC again, it will have to start with the defense, which produced a measly 14 sacks last season. There are nine starters back and this unit simply has to be better if the Gamecocks are to make any noise in the SEC East. On offense, this is always a good-but-not-great unit but the challenge is that the defense hung them out to dry last season and they couldn’t handle the pressure. Connor Mitch will be the quarterback and he’s got a capable cast around him.

The good news for South Carolina is they do get some breaks in the schedule. They don’t have a humongous showdown in Week 1 to start the schedule (they start with North Carolina), they don’t have to play Alabama or Ole Miss, and they also dodge Arkansas, who is expected to be a strong team this season. If you bet sportsbook lines, you know that South Carolina would have been a road dog in each of those three situations. They still have to play Georgia, Missouri and Tennessee on the road but visiting those places is better than visiting Tuscaloosa. The bottom line is that if Missouri can win back-to-back SEC East crowns then South Carolina should at the very least be in the mix.
