Joe Paterno, the most successful in terms of wins in college football in the U.S. but whose career ended abruptly in the middle of a scandal involving sexual abuse of minors, has died. He was 85.
Paterno's family confirmed the death of Paterno in a statement released this January 22.
Paterno's son, Scott, announced November 18 that his father was being treated for lung cancer, which was diagnosed in mid-November after a routine appointment for bronchitis.
In the course of his illustrious career, Paterno won 409 victories in 46 seasons, plus two national championships.
But his reputation, carved with the ideal of winning gracefully, was marred when a former aide was accused of sexually abusing 10 children over a period spanning 15 years, in some cases in the same sports complex at the University of Penn State.

Earlier this month, college sports betting enthusiasts were left wanting more, after one of the most lackluster BCS Bowl games since the NCAA instituted the format almost 14 years ago. The Alabama Crimson Tide won their second National Title in three seasons when they destroyed the LSU Tigers 21 to nothing. During the game, the Crimson Tide defense stepped to the forefront, as they did not allow the LSU offense to make it over the 50 yard line. However, while the price per head fans of Alabama and LSU were thrilled to watch their teams battle it out for the nations top championship, the rest of the NCAA watched with a foul taste in their mouths.
Essentially, under the current BCS format, the two best teams in the country ranked first and second are supposed to face one another. In other years, the first and second ranked teams have also been the champions of their specific conferences they naturally reside in. Yet, this season, the top two ranked teams came from the same conference, despite Alabama, not only not being the SEC Champion, but not even being placed in the SEC Championship game. In other words, the two best teams didn’t actually face each other for the BCS National Title game.

When the LSU Tigers finished the regular season a perfect 13-0, including 8-0 in the most competitive conference in college football, there was not one coach or player that didn’t understand they still had not face their toughest test of the year. That will come in this year’s Allstate BCS Championship Game, as the Tigers will look to beat the second-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide for the second time this season in the biggest NCAA football game of the year and take home a national title.

While it may not be as exciting as counting down to midnight later on, there is a long list of college football betting games for players to look forward to heading in to the final football weekend of 2011. Here is a quick look at some of the top matchups to keep an eye on before the clock hits midnight for 2011.
Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons Friday December 30, 2011 – 6:40 PM ET
Another SEC representative will take to the field looking to add to their conference’s win totals in bowls this year, as the Bulldogs battle Wake Forest in the Music City. Mississippi State failed to live up to expectations this year, but did do enough in the nation’s toughest conference to earn a spot in this game against the Demon Deacons. Considering that both of these schools barely qualified for the postseason, and both have a lot to prove going forward, look for the sports betting underdogs to come through and cover the number.
