NBA Playoffs Picks: Celtics Have To Find A Way To Win Without Rondo

(7) Boston Celtics @ (2) New York Knicks PicksThe Boston Celtics are known for rallying around the flag with fewer resources than they’d like to have. Can they beat one of the hottest teams in the NBA this weekend?

Eastern Conference First Round, Game 1:

(7) Boston Celtics @ (2) New York Knicks

In the realm of sports betting online, this game is one that will generate a fair amount of debate. Regardless of the particulars of your arrangement with a per head service, though, you will have to acknowledge that the New York Knicks are going to own more leverage than the Boston Celtics when this first-round playoff series begins.

New York should rate as the favorite in Game 1 on the weekend in the Big Apple. The biggest thing to realize about this series matchup is that the absence of Boston point guard Rajon Rondo will matter in the postseason.

The Celtics will miss the rebounding, defense and creating that Rondo offers. New York has a clear edge at the point guard spot, with Raymond Felton figuring to get into the paint on a reasonably consistent basis and make kickouts to open wing shooters. The Celtics have a quality defense, but the Knicks are in position to extend that defense and force Boston’s wings to stay on the perimeter. If Boston does stay at home, Felton will not get double-teamed on forays to the rim. He will be able to shoot a five-foot floater or draw a big man and dump the ball to Tyson Chandler for a dunk. The Knicks have more options at crunch time, especially since Boston does not have Ray Allen around for this postseason, marking the first time since 2007 that the elite jump shooter will be playing for a team other than the Celtics in April. Boston can make this game ugly, but New York is likely to have the right answers in crucial moments.

Here’s the case to make for Boston: The Celtics, even when the matchups seem to work against them, find ways to re-draw the calculus in their favor. This is because they have one of the two best active head coaches in the sport, Doc Rivers, who takes a back seat to only one bench boss in the NBA, Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs. Rivers gets so much from his teams, each and every season, working through injuries in a period of time when the Celtics have become older and more vulnerable. It’s true that the Knicks shoot the three-point shot at a high rate of efficiency, but in the playoffs, Rivers might be able to make the kinds of adjustments that will take the three-point arc away from New York’s wing shooters. Examining 5dimes.com reviews during an NBA season will give bettors a lot of information to work with. In this game, though, Boston might be able to change the equation and make New York less imposing than it normally is on offense.

Ultimately, if you do bet sports, you need to respect the Celtics’ grit, but you should probably stick with New York on the basis of its diversity on offense, particularly its ability to spread the floor with Felton operating at the point.
