Griffin Ready to take Clippers Responsibility

NBA NewsClippers power forward Blake Griffin has insisted he can fulfil a more prominent role in the team next season as the Los Angeles side look to make the playoffs for a third consecutive season.

Griffin, 24, has been the target of much fan criticism over his recent performances for the Clippers. There is a feeling that, despite once being the best player in the team, he has withdrawn into himself with the emergence of Chris Paul and DeAndre Jordan. Indeed, with point guard Paul often carrying the side last season, Griffin’s progression has taken a real hit.

Basketball betting fans have for a long time now suggested Griffin needs a stellar season to push the Clippers into the finals, a sentiment also reflected in the player:

“In my mind, this is the year I need to step into that role and really help (Paul) shoulder that load,” he told ESPN Los Angeles. “I’ll be right there with him at the end of games, being the guy that he can always count on.”

So, with Griffin ready to step up to the challenge and start scoring more, can the Clippers realistically think about making the 2014 Playoff latter stages? Last season they lost 4-2 in the first round to the Grizzlies, Paul top scoring in the two games they won. Griffin didn’t produce the goods when it mattered, top scoring during two defeats where he needed to prove his worth as a lead points scorer.

Next season should be different. The NBA odds say Los Angeles should make the playoffs and Griffin knows he must play with added intensity and take command of the team. His mid-range game needs improvement and he will get the chance to shoot more now Doc Rivers is in the side. An 18.0 points average is a good yield for a 24-year-old but we all know Griffin and the Clippers can do better than this.
