Johnson held off Jeff Gordon and Juan Montoya for the win in the Pepsi 500 at Auto Club Speedway last time out. Mark Martin, who had entered the race with the points lead, finished fourth, while Tony Stewart was fifth.

Carl Edwards, David Ragan, Kurt Busch, Clint Bowyer, and Kevin Harvick rounded out the day's Top 10 drivers. Ryan Newman was 15th, Greg Biffle was 20th, Brian Vickers was 29th, Kasey Kahne was 34th, and Denny Hamlin was 37th.

Johnson now holds a 12-point lead on Martin in the Chase standings, with Montoya 58 points back in third place. Stewart, Gordon, Busch, Biffle, Edwards, Hamlin, Newman, Kahne, and Vickers, in order, round out the Top 12.

David Reutimann won the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's back in May, while Jeff Burton took the checkered flag at the Bank of America 500 at Lowe's last October. Johnson has five career Cup wins at Lowe's, including four straight over the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

Gordon has four career Lowe's victories, most recently in 2007, while Kahne won there three times between 2006 and 2008. Martin picked up Cup wins at Lowe's in both 2002 and 1998, while Stewart won the UAW-GM Quality 500 on the track in 2003.

After competing in the NASCAR Banking 500 the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will move on to Martinsville Speedway for the Tums Fast Relief 500 on October 25. The rest of the Chase schedule then includes races at Talladega, Texas, Phoenix, and Homestead-Miami.
