The NL Races Heat Up as the All-Star Break Approaches

Baseball free picksDuring MLB spring training, the online sports betting experts all had their picks for which teams would be on top of their respective divisions. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals were early favorites to meet in the NLCS in October. But, as we have seen so far, the games are not played on paper and the actual results are varying significantly from what was expected.

As the All-Star break approaches, some of the sports betting services are starting to re-think their spring training predictions. It is starting to look like some teams are not quite up to the task of being contenders, while other teams are reveling in the spotlight that comes with playing winning baseball.

Friday – Arizona Diamondbacks @ Atlanta Braves

There were not many sports book experts who would have expected a game in late June between the Diamondbacks and the Braves to be a battle between two division leaders.

Both the Braves and the Diamondbacks came into the beginning of this week with 5-5 records in their previous 10 games. But the Braves have shown that they are more than up to the task of taking on other division leaders in their home ballpark. The Braves are extremely difficult to beat at home and the Diamondbacks are going to find that out.

My Pick: Atlanta Braves

Friday – Philadelphia Phillies @ Los Angeles Dodgers

The Philadelphia Phillies have a way of hanging around the middle of the NL East standings until the All-Star break. It is what happens after the All-Star break that decides how the Phillies’ season will end. The Los Angeles Dodgers are lining up to be this season’s biggest disappointment and that is not what the Dodgers’ owners wanted when they invested so much money into the team. The best online sports betting websites still do not expect either of these teams to contend for a title, but the Phillies are still in that mode where they make every game interesting.

Pick: Philadelphia Phillies

Saturday – Milwaukee Brewers @ Pittsburgh Pirates

This is the kind of game that the Pittsburgh Pirates need to win. The Brewers have sunk to the bottom of the NL Central standings and the Pirates are still lingering close to the top of the division. If the Pirates want to show that they are finally contenders in the NL, then they have to win games like this one over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers will not go quietly, but this is a game that the Pirates can win.

My Pick: Pittsburgh Pirates

Sunday – San Diego Padres @ Miami Marlins

The San Diego Padres have been the most surprising team in the majors over the past month or so and have actually put themselves in a position to think about an NL wild card spot. As expected, the Marlins are the doormat of the NL with the league’s worst record. The Padres should be able to keep their momentum going with this game.

My Pick: San Diego Padres
