Tampa Bay Rays vs. Toronto Blue Jays Betting Picks

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Toronto Blue Jays Betting PicksThe biggest price per head issue facing the Toronto Blue Jays this season has been inept starting pitching, as the team ranks 29th in quality starts and 24th in team ERA. A cast that was expected to be among the best in the American League has been absolutely awful, and the biggest reason why the preseason World Series favorites finished the first half of the season four games below .500. One of those starters that have struggled this year is the reigning National League Cy Young award winner RA Dickey, who is 8-10 with a 4.69 ERA. Dickey will get the nod when Toronto wraps up a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays, a start he should feel confident heading in to.

Dickey’s best game of the season came against the Rays in late June when he went the distance in a two-hit shutout. Tampa Bay will counter with 24-year old Chris Archer, who doesn’t have the same level of experience but has come on strong over his last five starts following a shaky start to the year.

MLB Betting Preview: Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays are 5-0 in the last five games that Archer has started, with the kid getting the win in three of those live betting contests including back-to-back starts in which he did not allow an earned run. Archer is coming off his first complete-game shutout after blanking the Houston Astros, and while that won’t be expected of him against the Blue Jays he will need to bring his best stuff. The Tampa Bay offense has been surprisingly good ranking in the top-10 in batting average, runs scored, and OBP, but must be more consistent on the road.

The Blue Jays’ offense can also be a little more consistent, and should have plenty of motivation with former great Carlos Delgado being honored before the game. The Toronto offense sent both Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion to the All-Star game, but will need to do a better job of getting those home run hitters more men on base in front of them. Dickey has gone 1-2 since that brilliant performance against the Rays, and needs to lock things down as the second half of the sports betting season gets underway.

MLB Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

The Blue Jays lacked consistency throughout the first half and that is reason why it is hard to bank on them even after Dickey’s strong performance against Tampa Bay the last time around. The Rays came on strong down the stretch before the All-Star game and have gotten some excellent work out of Archer, so look for them to steal one here as they continue to try and catch the Boston Red Sox for top spot in the AL East.
