O’s set for AL East spot after Yankees sweep

AL East spot after Yankees sweepBaltimore are likely to clinch an AL East playoff place at the loss of the New York Yankees following the Orioles’ three-game series sweep of the Bombers last weekend.

With Boston running away with this division second is the only prize left and these two teams are likely to push each other all season long. Yet this weekend’s series exposed some real deficiencies in the Yankees rotation and proved how this strong Orioles batting order will hit them into October.

Heading into the series with a 1-5 record from their past six games, few sports betting punters backed Buck Showalter’s side to turn up against a Yankees team primed to leapfrog them into AL East second place. It almost started so well for New York as they led Friday’s late game by three until the sixth, when the O’s offense ripped into CC Sabathia and pinched four runs to take the first clash.

That win set the precedent over the weekend and Baltimore were comfortable victors on Saturday and Sunday to push four games ahead of their east-coast rivals. Chris Davis, leading the majors for home runs (31), hit three against the Yanks and earned a further six RBIs. His left-arm swing is the envy of many baseball players and the team around him help those stats no end.

Up against Sabathia fans who bet on sport expected a closer contest but this O’s offense is surprising many. JJ Hardy, Nate McLouth and Manny Machado are all solid base hitters, while Adam Jones knows how to find the stands when required. It helped that a 40,000-strong crowd got behind the team for their first Sunday Night Baseball clash at Camden Yards since 2005 and if Baltimore maintain strong throughout July they’re more likely to contest the Red Sox for first place and leave a struggling Yankees side way behind.
