St. Louis Cardinals vs. Tampa Bay Rays Betting OddsNo matter how poor the roster turnover is from year to year it seems as though the Tampa Bay Rays consistently find a way to remain in the hunt for a playoff spot in the crowded American League East. In order to stay near the top of the most competitive division in baseball the Rays will need to take down one of best from the National League in a St. Louis Cardinals’ team that finds itself in a similar position.

Odds: Tampa Bay Rays – 120

The Cardinals are looking up at the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central, but are still within striking distance of the division lead.

St. Louis will turn to Kyle McClellan in hopes that he can break out of his losing skid against one of the Rays’ most inconsistent arms.

MLB Betting Preview: St. Louis Cardinals

McClellan has not registered a MLB betting win in over a month, going 0-3 while allowing a total of 16 combined earned runs in his past four starts. The 27-year old has failed to find the strike zone on numerous occasions, and for as good as the St. Louis offense has the potential to be they will need more from starters like McClellan. With franchise player Albert Pujols on the shelf with a fractured arm, the Cardinals have leaned even more on veteran Lance Berkman and Matt Holliday, but will need more hitters to step up and provide run support. Berkman is hitting .295 with 18 home runs, down from the beginning of the season but still strong numbers for a 35-year old that is on pace to be an All Star in 2011.

While the Rays simply continue to find a way to win on the road, they will need to be much better at home where a .500 record has cost them in the battle with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox for the AL East lead. Part of that is a team batting average that has ranked in the bottom-third of the league, but even more it is about capitalizing in the clutch. Niemann allowed five earned runs in just three innings of work against the Houston Astros in the game following a win over the Milwaukee Brewers in which he threw six shutout innings, and it is no secret which pitcher Tampa Bay will need to get a win in this MLB game.

MLB Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

The Rays and Cardinals both find themselves within striking range of a division title this weekend, and while Tampa Bay is playing at home that might actually work against them given their record at Tropicana Field in 2011. McClellan isn’t as bad as his numbers have been over the past sports betting bonus month, and perhaps this is the game he bounces back in.
