Sports Betting Overview
Baseball betting in the AL East is starting to narrow down to a two-horse race. If the Tampa Bay Rays want to add another entry to this horse betting flurry, then they need to play well against the Yankees in this series. When MLB news headlines reported last year that Rays speedster Carl Crawford was heading to the Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay fans started to wonder where their offense was going to come from. While the Rays are still able to compete with a good pitching staff, the lack of offense caused by the departure of Crawford is keeping Tampa Bay from contending.
The Yankees are only a game and a half out of first place in the AL East despite having pitching problems. The Yankee offense is clicking on all cylinders, especially since Derek Jeter was able to finally get his 3,000th hit. It seems that the only starting pitcher that can produce of late for the Yankees is C.C. Sabathia.
The Yankee bullpen also seems a bit inconsistent lately. The middle relief is holding up, but closer Mariano Rivera has been having problems holding down leads lately. But Rivera knows how to bring his game back around, and the Yankees will stay in the AL East pennant fight until the end of the season.
Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays are currently seven games out of first place in the AL East and five and a half back in the AL wild card race. But Tampa has had a rough time lately. They have lost six of their last 10 games, including a current two-game losing streak. Tampa just lost a tough game to the Red Sox 1-0 that put Tampa even further back in the standings. Jeremy Hellickson starts on the mound for the Rays in this game, and Hellickson has been having some difficulties as of late. He is 1-4 in his last five starts, but he has also been victimized by the Rays’ inability to score runs. Hellickson has been able to hold the opposition to three runs or less in the last four starts but he is 1-3 in those games. The Yankees will not be helping that situation at all.
New York Yankees
Bartolo Colon starts for the Yankees on the mound in this game, and he is starting to bring his season around. Despite two straight losses in his last two starts, Colon is 4-2 in his last six starts. In that stretch, he has two games that he allowed no earned runs. However, his most recent start was a disaster against the Toronto Blue Jays. He went less than one inning and allowed three earned runs on six hits. The Yankees are hoping that Colon can bring his game back around and start getting into the sixth and seventh innings of games to give the bullpen a rest.
The Bottom Line
The Rays need this series if they want to stay in the pennant race. But without run production, it is going to be almost impossible for Tampa to beat the Yankees. But the Rays may be catching Colon at a bad time and they may be able to put up the runs they need to win this game. Either way, with the Rays falling further and further behind in the division and wild card standings, divisional series like this one become that much more important.
