MLB Betting: Angels, Tigers Showdown Highlights Wild Weekend in American League

2012 MLB Betting OddsAs the summer days continue to fall away, the countdown to October is on and that means the race to the playoffs is beginning to heat up. In the American League alone there are still eight teams in postseason contention, with that high number even more a testament to the parity in the league than it is due to the extra wild card spot. The push towards the playoffs will continue this weekend with three key sports betting matchups to keep an eye on in the AL, including a pair of Wild Card contenders battling it out in the Motor City. Toronto Blue Jays @ Baltimore Orioles
Saturday, 7:05 PM ET

The Orioles were the surprise team from the first half that most 5Dimes experts projected would slip in the second half, but the truth is their drop from top spot in the AL East to third is more about the Yankees and Rays improving than anything else.

Baltimore is still over 10 games above .500 and right behind Tampa Bay for the top Wild Card spot, with a crucial home series against the Blue Jays this weekend. Wei-Yin Chen has been the brightest spot in an Orioles’ rotation that has done just enough to keep the team in contention for a playoff spot, winning four of his past five decisions to improve to 12-7 with a 3.87 ERA. However, Chen will be in tough when he starts for Baltimore this Saturday opposite Brandon Morrow, who allowed just one earned with eight strikeouts over 6.1 innings in a 4-1 win over Baltimore in late July.

MLB Betting Pick: Toronto Blue Jays

Los Angeles Angels @ Detroit Tigers
Saturday, 7:05 PM ET

As of Wednesday, the Angels were four per head games back of the final Wild Card spot and 8.5 games back of the AL East-leading Texas Rangers after losing seven of 10. While it may not be time to hit the panic button just yet, this Los Angeles team is far too talented to be performing at such a low level. The Angels head to Detroit this weekend where they will battle a Tigers’ team that is fighting Chicago for top spot in the AL Central, and both teams will approach this series as though a postseason spot is on the line. Doug Fister is coming off one of his worst starts of the season but has otherwise been very consistent over the last two months. Angels’ starter Dan Haren has given up five-earned runs in each of his last two starts, and unless the Los Angeles offense gets to Fister early this sportsbook contest could get messy fast.

MLB Betting Pick: Detroit Tigers

Seattle Mariners @ Chicago White Sox
Saturday, 7:10 PM ET

The White Sox have held their lead over the Tigers for all of August, and can really help their chances at the division with a sweep of Seattle. However, the Mariners are playing some excellent baseball despite ranking last in the AL West, including a stretch of nine wins in 10 games before Wednesday night. While the series won’t be an easy one, Blake Beaven’s 5.00 ERA should be enough for Jose Quintana and the Sox to win Saturday night’s game.
