Baseball Weekend Free Picks: Saturday August 3rd

MLB betting PredictionsThe 2013 Tampa Bay Rays are the first American League East team to win at least 21 price per head games in a 24-game stretch since the 2004 Boston Red Sox. Ironically, the run pushed Tampa Bay to within one-half game of the Red Sox for top spot in the AL East heading in to this week. The Rays will look to stay hot at home with the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants in town, and fortunately for them they aren’t playing at all like the best team in baseball this season.

Arizona Diamondbacks @ Boston Red Sox
Friday, 7:10 PM ET

A .500 record over a two-week span simply isn’t good enough for the Red Sox in the AL East, and they are going to have to find a way to turn things around before they fall too far back. Visiting Arizona is in a similar position after conceding the National League West lead to the streaking Los Angeles Dodgers, but they haven’t been very good on the road and now travel across the country to play an AL opponent.

Brandon McCarthy is coming off one of his worst starts of the season and is still just 2-4 with a 5.00 ERA following a stint on the DL, while Jon Lester is coming off one of his best live betting starts for Boston – seven innings of shutout ball in a win over the Baltimore Orioles.

My Pick: Boston Red Sox - 170

San Francisco Giants @ Tampa Bay Rays
Friday, 7:10 PM ET

It wasn’t long ago that the Giants were in contention for the NL West lead, but they have been awful since June and have fallen in to a double-digit hole in the division. It’s not going to get any easier in Tampa Bay, especially with the Rays’ starters pitching at an elite level. 24-year old rookie Chris Archer is 5-0 over his last seven starts, and has allowed one run or fewer in five of them. San Francisco will counter with Madison Bumgarner, and while he has been one of their most consistent arms with 10 wins and a 2.76 ERA, the Giants have lost each of the last two sportsbook reviews games that he has started thanks to just one run of support over his last 15 innings of work.

My Pick: Tampa Bay Rays - 150

New York Yankees @ San Diego Padres
Friday, 10:10 PM ET

The Yankees are in a similar sports betting position to San Francisco in terms of sliding, only they aren’t the defending World Series champions and their hopes of a title this year are fading fast. New York is at risk of falling further in the AL East, but can stop the bleeding with a strong series at San Diego. Andrew Cashner will get the call for the Padres in the opener, but the real story is Yankees’ starter CC Sabathia and whether or not he will be able to help turn things around. New York has lost each of the last four games that Sabathia has started, and he has allowed exactly seven earned runs over five innings of work in each of his last two starts. The Yankees need Sabathia to be a lot better than that, and a trip to San Diego should help him get back on track. My Pick: New York Yankees - 140
