Baseball Betting and Free Picks: September 22nd, 2012

Baseball Betting and Free PicksWith the three divisions and the top Wild Card spot in the National League all but locked up, the final month of the regular season would be pretty boring right about now if it wasn’t for the decision by the MLB to add an extra Wild Card spot this season. That decision, as well as a couple of incredible runs by the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers, and Philadelphia Phillies has created an incredible NL Wild Card race that will continue to unwind this Bodog weekend. St. Louis Cardinals @ Chicago Cubs
Saturday, 1:05 PM ET

The Cardinals have the second-best run differential in the NL to only the Washington Nationals, but have little chance of catching the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Central with a double-digit deficit and not enough time left to close the gap.

However, St. Louis is right there holding down the second Wild Card spot in the NL playoff race, and after last season’s wild run they have to be confident that anything can happen if they can just get in. A trip to face the lowly Cubs this weekend represents the perfect opportunity to move closer to clinching that playoff spot, although they will rely on an arm that wasn’t part of last year’s team for Saturday’s game. Adam Wainwright missed all of last season due to injury, but will play a key role in whether or not the Cardinals get in this season with his play down the sports betting stretch. Wainwright’s 3.97 ERA isn’t incredible, but it is better than Travis Cook’s 4.25 mark and St. Louis has a lot more offensive potential.

Milwaukee Brewers @ Washington Nationals
Sunday, 1:05 PM ET

The Brewers were left for dead by many online sportsbook experts before their latest run that included a monster 6-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates to open their series this week. Milwaukee is ranked third in the majors in runs scored and its pitching has improved over the past month, to the point where they are now right there in the Wild Card race. 23-year old Wily Peralta is among those arms that have stepped in to the starting rotation and been excellent through three starts, allowing just four earned runs through 20 innings and leading the Brewers to three-straight wins. Peralta will get a tough assignment this weekend starting opposite Gio Gonzalez, although Gonzalez did allow four earned runs over just six innings in his last Betonline matchup against Milwaukee.

MLB Betting Pick: Milwaukee Brewers

Atlanta Braves @ Philadelphia Phillies
Sunday, 4:05 PM ET

The Phillies are right there with the Brewers among the most incredible stories of the second half, but will be in tough this weekend when they face one of their biggest rivals in Atlanta. Philadelphia should be comfortable with their matchup for Sunday’s game though with Roy Halladay on the mound opposite Mike Minor. Halladay had led the Phillies to five-straight wins before a tough loss at Houston in his last start, but should benefit from the added sense of urgency in this contest.
