James, who used that number since I was a sophomore in high school, said publicly that it would be a way to pay tribute to Jordan, Hall of Fame for the last few weeks.
"What has made Michael Jordan of the sport should be recognized in some way," said James at the end of a game on Thursday against the Heat in Miami, where Jordan was among the audience.
"There would be LeBron James or Kobe Bryant or Dwyane Wade or any other in the last ten years without Michael Jordan," he said.

FIFA punished with two months suspended and fined 25,000 Swiss francs ($ 24,630) to coach Argentina's soccer player Diego Armando Maradona.
With the penalty, the International Federation of Football Association (FIFA) Maradona punishes insults to the media after the qualifying game against Uruguay in October, which gave the pass to the World Cup 2010 Africa Argentines.
The penalty will take effect on November 15 and will run until January 15, 2010, FIFA said in a statement.
That means that the participation of Maradona with Argentina during the 2010 World Cup will not be affected.
The Argentine coach, 49, arrived yesterday at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, where he spoke for 40 minutes and is responsible for the process, "apologized to FIFA and world football family."

The next Sunday Night Football features a duel that, surely, will be ending next January. Tom Brady versus Peyton Manning, two of the best quarterbacks in the last 10 years in the NFL will once again faces and will be a collision in which every yard will be fought until the last second.
Colts and Patriots are tied for second place in wins in the entire NFL betting history with 109, trailing only San Francisco 49ers holding the top spot with 113. Whoever wins will come closer to the prized brand and better yet, to revenge the defeats suffered years earlier in the season and playoff clashes between these teams.
New England has managed to "dominate the horse" because it has 44 wins for only 28 defeats. However, in the final game in Week 9 of 2008, the Colts won 18-15, Tom Brady did not play.
An added time the game is whether the Pats can stop the undefeated Colts and their intention to approach the record for most consecutive wins in regular season. New England should resist extreme on the field to defend his own record, 21-0.
